The British authorities have declared a major incident and evacuated the residents of a village located near the RAF Fairford base, which is used by the United States Air Force, according to BBC and Sky News.
Five men have been arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act, announced the Counter-Terrorism Police, as quoted by the BBC.
According to British authorities, the police received a call around 00:45 BST (02.45, Romanian time) regarding “three suspicious vehicles” heading towards RAF Fairford base. A 400m security cordon was established around the vehicles during their inspection, and 85 households were evacuated.
14:07 RAF Lakenheath base in Suffolk is in “Charlie” alert status, the second level of threat severity that can be declared by the US Department of Defense. This base is theoretically for British forces, but is only used by American military personnel.
The American air base Lakenheath has confirmed the current threat level. The confirmation comes amidst information that RAF Fairford base has been raised to the highest threat level, “Delta”.
The U.S. government’s website specifies that “Charlie” level alerts apply: “When an incident occurs or information is received indicating the likelihood of a terrorist action against personnel or facilities.”
The “Delta” level “applies in the immediate area where a terrorist attack has taken place or when information has been received indicating that a terrorist action against a specific location or person is imminent”.
