Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Thursday that the likelihood of international disputes continuing is very high as the world changes, but that the situation will improve with the decline of what he called “Western hegemony,” reports Reuters.

Catastrophic scenarios had to be avoided, Putin stated.

“Regardless of the scenario that will take shape globally in the coming years, the continuation of international conflicts is, unfortunately, very likely. This is due, in part, to the fact that the fundamental changes underway – and the opportunities they offer – fuel ambitions and the desire to take risks in the hope of a seemingly huge gain,” declared the Russian leader.

The statement comes in the context where the Kremlin confirmed on Wednesday that Russia has issued nuclear warnings to NATO, alerting the Alliance about the risks of a possible attempt to isolate the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, thus reminding the “hot-headed” leaders in Europe of Moscow’s policy provisions in case of such actions.

On the other hand, NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, stated on Wednesday that there is no imminent threat to the North Atlantic Alliance territory and that the assessment of the Russian threat remains unchanged from three weeks, three months, or a year ago.
