A senior officer of the Ukrainian navy was killed in an armed attack in Odessa, and the police have detained an 82-year-old suspect, according to Ukrainian authorities and local press reports.
Investigators suspect that the man intentionally caused a collision with the victim’s car, after which he allegedly shot at it. Authorities are investigating the case as a premeditated murder, writes The Sun.
The Attack on Odessa
The incident took place on Liustdorfska Street, in the Kyivski district of Odesa.
According to available information, the suspect allegedly drove his car into the vehicle where the 50-year-old Ukrainian officer was. After the collision, he reportedly used a firearm and shot the officer.
Emergency services arriving at the scene confirmed the victim’s death.
The police apprehended the suspect as he was trying to leave the area. He was charged with premeditated murder and illegal possession of a weapon.
Investigation into possible ties with Russia
According to reports quoted by the Ukrainian press, investigators suspect that the attack may have been organized by Russian services.
A version investigated by the authorities is that the suspect might have believed he was carrying out a mission on behalf of the Security Service of Ukraine, SBU.
The man would have traveled from the city of Dnipro to Odessa to carry out what would have been presented to him as an operation. No evidence has been publicly presented yet to clarify who would have ordered the attack or whether it was directly coordinated by Russian authorities.
Investigators are checking these aspects as well.
