Maia Sandu stated that the Republic of Moldova intends to strengthen its cooperation with Finland in the field of security and resilience. Chisinau is counting on support from Helsinki to advance the process of joining the European Union.
The statement was made by the president, during a joint press conference with her Finnish counterpart, Alexander Stubb, during the official visit to Finland, writes newsmaker.md.
According to Maia Sandu, the European choice of the Republic of Moldova also has a security dimension, in the context of the war triggered by Russia in Ukraine.
“The 1200 kilometers of the Republic of Moldova’s border with Ukraine are part of the same eastern border of Europe. Our accession strengthens the security of both Ukraine and the European Union. A European Moldova secures the southwestern flank of Ukraine and strengthens stability at the EU’s eastern border. A Moldova under Kremlin’s control would make Ukraine more vulnerable“, declared Maia Sandu.
The head of state also spoke about the security pressures facing the Republic of Moldova. According to her, this year, Russian drones have penetrated the country’s airspace over 45 times, and eight such incidents have occurred in the last week.
Maia Sandu stated that the Republic of Moldova is strengthening its defense and security capabilities, including through investments in anti-aircraft defense, modernization of the army, and combating cyber attacks and information manipulation.
“Our response is to become stronger. We invest in anti-aircraft defense, modernize our army, and increase defense spending. We strengthen our ability to combat information manipulation and cyber attacks, and to protect our elections“, said the president.
The President also mentioned that the Republic of Moldova wishes to advance in the EU accession process, highlighted progress in the energy sector, and thanked Finland for the support given to Ukraine.
