Matthew Whitaker calls for a reorganization of NATO’s military bases and infrastructure for the relocation of forces to the east, in the context of the USA revising its troop presence in Europe.
The North Atlantic Alliance must modernize its military infrastructure to move forces and equipment from Western Europe to Eastern Europe, “where we would expect any future conflict,” declared the US Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, on Monday.
Trump’s NATO envoy made these statements at a round table organized at the Warsaw Security Forum, in the context where Washington is reassessing its military presence in Europe.
However, the American ambassador stated that Europe ranks fourth among Washington’s strategic priorities, following domestic security, the western hemisphere, and the Pacific, writes Politico.
He emphasized that outdated military bases, fuel supply chains, and agreements regulating the stationing of American troops in Europe are areas that require attention in the process of reassessing the positioning of American forces and military bases, which is currently underway.
Also, the special envoy of President Donald Trump to NATO emphasized the importance of military mobility and the “relocation of resources from west to east,” citing discussions with the EU Commissioner for Defense, Andrius Kubilius. European officials have warned that Russia might be prepared to attack a NATO member country by the end of this decade.
