One of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in Europe has been affected by a cyber attack. Hackers targeted Femern Link Contractors (FLC), the company building the Fehmarn Belt tunnel between Denmark and Germany, and the incident took essential systems offline and seriously disrupted work on the Danish construction site.
Femern Link Contractors (FLC) has announced to the Danish state company Sund & Bælt, which oversees major transport infrastructure projects, that it has been the target of a cyber attack. According to The Copenhagen Post, the hackers have disabled essential systems, and the activity on the construction site in Rødbyhavn has been seriously disrupted.
No information was provided about the targeted systems, the exact scale of the disruptions, or the identity of the attackers.
“We are in dialogue with FLC regarding this situation and, at this moment, we do not have additional information,” stated Jens Villemoes, the communication director of Sund & Bælt, in a statement published on the official website of the project.
Fehmarn Belt, the direct link between Denmark and Germany
Fehmarn Belt is part of a broader European modernization program for railway transport. The construction began in Denmark in 2020, and on the German side a year later. The tunnel will connect Rødbyhavn with Puttgarden and will allow crossing in about seven minutes by train and ten minutes by car.
