One less beer per year for each adult in Europe could mean hundreds of millions of euros saved across the entire European Union. Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs launched the idea as a call for solidarity with Ukraine.

The idea of Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, launched on Thursday in Brussels, ahead of the European Council’s autumn meeting, comes at a time when Kiev still needs support, and European leaders are trying to find solutions to continue the aid.

“One less beer per year for each European (…). That beer simply implies a cost. There, what is at stake are human lives. We drink less, and they save their lives. It’s that simple,” is the extremely simple solution proposed by Andris Kulbergs.

Upon his arrival at the European meeting on October 15, he insisted that the 27 member states must demonstrate their ability to act together and not always depend on others when it comes to supporting Kiev. The Latvian Prime Minister pleaded for the maintenance of support granted to Ukraine, warning that the country is preparing for a difficult winter, amid the intensification of hostilities with Russia, despite the fact that it continues to suffer heavy losses, according to Agerpres.

On Friday, October 16, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet with EU leaders to discuss the evolution of the war. The summit’s agenda also includes the future multiannual budget of the Union, a subject on which member states have not yet reached a common point.
