The Ukrainian military intelligence service (HUR) published, on Thursday, information about a new Russian cruise missile, named “Filin”. On the institution’s website, a 3D model of the missile was also published, along with a list of components and electronic equipment used, reports Kyiv Independent.
According to HUR, Russia began using the missile at the end of the summer. The Ukrainian agency describes it as a continuation of Moscow’s efforts to develop “cheap means of jet-propelled and ground-launched aerial attack”. The “Filin” missile is 3.5 meters long and has a wingspan of three meters. It can carry a warhead of 50 or 100 kilograms and can travel up to 1,200 kilometers, with a maximum speed of 800 kilometers per hour, according to information published by HUR.
The rocket can fly at extremely low altitudes or up to six kilometers high. Some of the rocket’s components appear to be made by 3D printing, according to the Ukrainian military information service. The onboard electronic systems are similar to those used in other Russian rockets, but include a larger proportion of components made in China.
HUR has also identified 35 components made in the USA. The equipment on board the missile is manufactured by the Russian company PLAZ LLC, which also participates in the production of the Harpiya drone, according to HUR. The R500 engine is produced by another Russian company, Reynolds LLC.
