More than 16 new towers, likely intended to house air defense systems, were built in October near Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence in Valdai. The number of air defense positions in the area has doubled over the past six months, according to an analysis of satellite imagery.
A new ring of towers designed to defend against drone attacks has been built around Vladimir Putin’s residence in Valdai, in northwestern Russia, according to Radio Free Europe and the OSINT analyst known by the username @jembobineuse.
According to the investigation, the new defense system is expected to include positions along a perimeter encompassing the reserve airfield at Khotilovo and a secret biological laboratory on Lisy Island.
Analysis of satellite imagery indicates that more than 16 new towers were erected in October within a 50-kilometre radius of the presidential residence. They could house Pantsir or Tor air defence systems, designed to intercept airborne threats, including drones.
Analysts have yet to identify all the positions in the northern part of the perimeter. They estimate, however, that work could continue over the coming months.
More than 50 air defense positions in the Valdai area
According to estimates presented in the investigation, there are currently more than 50 air defense positions around the town of Valdai.
The number is roughly half that of the positions built in Moscow and the surrounding region.
In April, journalists reported that the number of towers surrounding Putin’s residence had reached 27. The new structures suggest a significant expansion of protective infrastructure in recent months.
The placement of these systems reflects the Russian authorities’ efforts to strengthen the defenses of sites deemed important amid Ukrainian drone attacks.
The Valdai residence has also been linked to Alina Kabaeva, the former gymnast who reportedly has two sons with Vladimir Putin.
