Poland has deployed counterterrorism police units near its border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad following warnings of possible acts of sabotage in the coming days, Polish public broadcaster TVP World reported on Monday.
Marek Boroń, chief of the Polish police, said his officers are working with the military, border guards and intelligence services as part of an operation to bolster the law enforcement presence in the country’s northeast.
Boroń said that a large number of police officers—including counterterrorism units—are operating in the region, with some having been brought in from other areas.
\”Police are securing the border area amid concerns over potential incidents that could lead to acts of sabotage,\” the official told RMF radio.
Poland also received information about the acts of sabotage from \”foreign agencies\”.
\”Everything is based on information provided by various sources, including foreign agencies. We must ensure the safety of the people living there, protect strategic sites, and manage a range of situations that could put the population at risk\”, he added.
According to security sources cited by RMF, the Polish government received warnings last week from the Military Intelligence Service (SWW) and allied intelligence agencies. The warnings indicated that armed groups might attempt to cross the border from the Russian exclave in the coming days.
