Mikie Sherrill, governor of the U.S. state of New Jersey, has warned companies that importing Russian diesel “will result in severe penalties,” the Kyiv Independent reported on Wednesday.
The newspaper cites a document dated November 2 in which Governor Sherrill warned authorities and companies operating at New Jersey ports that importing diesel fuel from Russia remains a violation of federal law, despite an agreement on the issue between Presidents Trump and Putin.
“Any attempt to profit from the illegal trade in Russian fuel will result in severe sanctions. I urge you to turn away any tanker seeking to use your facilities to conduct such illicit activities,” the document quoted by the Ukrainian publication states.
Importing Russian diesel would only help finance Russia’s war against Ukraine without bringing down fuel prices in the United States, the governor added.
