The United States, under the leadership of President Donald Trump, is losing trust globally – this is the opinion of about 59% of Americans, including a third of supporters of the Republican Party, according to a survey conducted by Reuters and Ipsos. Additionally, around 75% of respondents expressed opposition to a potential third term candidacy for Trump, although the US Constitution already prohibits this possibility. More than half (53%) of the interviewed Republicans also opposed a new candidacy. The survey also showed a decline in the approval rating of Trump’s actions, reaching the lowest point since his return to the White House on January 20. Currently, only 42% of Americans approve of his performance, compared to 47% in the first few hours after taking office. Three weeks ago, 43% of respondents had a favorable opinion of his performance. In comparison, his predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden, had an approval rating of 55% in the early days of his presidency, but it gradually declined and, starting in 2022, did not exceed 42%. The lowest level was recorded before the 2024 presidential elections – only 35%.According to the survey, the majority of Americans (57%) do not support Trump’s policy towards universities, which are being denied funding. Additionally, 66% of respondents believe that the president should not have control over key cultural institutions such as museums and national theaters. Even in regards to immigration – one of the central themes of Trump’s domestic agenda – opinions are divided: 45% support the measures taken, while 46% oppose mass deportations and restrictions. The Reuters/Ipsos survey was conducted from April 16-21 on a sample of 4,306 adults from the US.Previously, major protests against Trump’s policies have taken place in the US. On April 5th, thousands of people took to the streets in all 50 states under the slogan “Hands off!”. A second round of protests took place on April 19th. Demonstrators denounced what they consider to be abuses by Trump, including deportations without following legal procedures, the dismantling of federal agencies, and “attacks on higher education”. Additionally, protesters demanded an end to funding cuts to social programs and an end to pressure on transgender individuals and other minorities.
