“The Republic of Moldova is making significant progress towards achieving energy independence, gradually reducing its dependence on Russian gas and diversifying its energy sources. In an increasingly volatile regional context, energy security has become a national priority, and the authorities in Chisinau consistently take action to protect the country’s strategic interests.

    Reducing dependence on Russian gas
In recent decades, Moldova has been heavily dependent on imported gas from the Russian Federation, which has made any political or commercial tension have a direct impact on internal stability and the economy. To eliminate this risk, the government of the Republic of Moldova has launched a series of initiatives aimed at reducing and eventually eliminating this vulnerability.

Among the most important measures are strengthening energy links with Romania and integrating into the European energy market. The completion of the Iasi-Ungheni-Chisinau gas pipeline and the use of energy interconnections with neighboring countries allow Moldova to import natural gas and electricity from alternative sources, including the European Union.

    Investments in renewable energy
Another essential pillar of the energy strategy is the development of renewable energy sources. The government supports investments in solar, wind, and biomass energy, providing tax incentives and technical support for green projects. These initiatives not only enhance energy security but also contribute to reducing carbon emissions, aligning Moldova with European objectives for the green transition.

In recent years, pilot projects have been launched in several districts of the country, and the interest of both domestic and international investors in the renewable energy sector is growing. Developing this segment will ensure a balanced and sustainable energy mix in the long run.

EU support: 250 million euros by 2025
The efforts of the Republic of Moldova are actively supported by its external partners, especially the European Union. Brussels has announced that it will provide financial support of around 250 million euros for 2025, which will be used to consolidate the country’s energy independence.

This support includes investments in energy infrastructure, modernizing distribution networks, and promoting energy efficiency. The funds will contribute to diversifying energy sources, increasing internal production capacity, and reducing vulnerability to external shocks.

    A long but irreversible journey
The energy independence of the Republic of Moldova will not be achieved overnight, but the direction is clear and irreversible. With international support, political will, and private sector involvement, Moldova has the chance to build a resilient, modern, and future-oriented energy system.

Energy transformation is not only a strategic necessity but also an opportunity for economic development, innovation, and environmental protection. In a changing world, Moldova has chosen to chart its own path towards autonomy and security.”
