The court has established that White House officials violated the US Constitution, after the Associated Press (AP) was kicked out of the press group with access to the institution. A federal judge has ordered for reporters to be allowed back into the Oval Office staff.
Donald Trump “banned” the AP team, as the news room did not agree to use the term “the American Gulf” instead of “the Mexican Gulf”, reports news.ro. The judge Trevor McFadden, appointed by the current American president, has obliged the White House to once again grant access to Associated Press journalists in public institutions where correspondents from the White House press group have access.
“In accordance with the First Amendment of the Constitution, if the government opens its doors to some journalists – whether it is the Oval Office, the East Room, or any other part – it cannot then close these doors to other journalists because of their views. The Constitution, no more, no less, demands this,” pointed out the judge.
The White House began limiting AP’s access to various events involving Donald Trump after the agency stated it would continue to use the term “the Mexican Gulf”, while also recognizing Trump’s order to change the name to “the American Gulf”. The press team filed a lawsuit against three high-ranking advisers from the White House, citing constraints.
The Trump administration has five days to challenge the decision.
