Russia continues to systematically strike Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, in a campaign meant to leave the country without electricity and heat during the winter, reports the German publication Bild.

According to journalists, between 55 and 60% of Ukraine’s gas infrastructure has already been damaged. In just three days in October, missile attacks destroyed a significant portion of the thermal production capacities, and a facility of the company Naftogaz was hit six times.

Bild writes that Moscow does not seem willing to stop these attacks, and each new strike complicates preparations for the cold season. Ukrainian government sources, quoted anonymously, warned that “the coming winter will be the hardest yet.”

Calls from Germany for additional support

The German Minister of Economy, Robert Reiche, stated that Berlin will continue to finance the Support Fund for the Ukrainian energy sector, increasing the current contribution of 390 million euros by another 60 million.

In parallel, Johann Wadephul, the German Foreign Minister, called on Western countries to intensify military and financial aid, warning that “Ukraine must not be left alone at such a critical time.”
