Long-term peace? Only with European troops in Ukraine, says former NATO leader

The former NATO Secretary General warns: without decisive action, the war in Ukraine risks becoming “endless” if Europe does not change its strategy regarding Ukraine and does not radically intensify pressure on Russia, the war could become “endless”, and Ukraine – the aggressed country – will continue to lose territories, believes the former NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

In an interview given to The Guardian, Rasmussen stated that Europe should send troops to Ukraine before signing a possible ceasefire agreement. At the same time, he proposes the creation of a “shield of missiles and drones” on European territory, intended to protect Ukraine’s infrastructure as well.

“We need to help the Ukrainian people defend themselves from Russian missiles and drones, by building an air shield that can shoot them down. NATO countries bordering Ukraine can host NATO anti-aircraft and missile defense systems,” explained the former official, who led NATO between 2009 and 2014.

According to Rasmussen, if Poland and other states on NATO’s eastern flank install these systems, Russia will understand that an attack on them would mean an attack against the entire Alliance.

He also considers it necessary to deliver long-range missiles to Ukraine – and Europe should take the first step, without waiting for the decisions of the United States. If Germany sends Taurus missiles, the discussion about delivering Tomahawk missiles from the US could also be resumed.

Rasmussen claims that Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski asked Donald Trump for these missiles, but the former American leader removed the subject from the agenda after a phone call with Vladimir Putin.
