Germany and the United Kingdom have sounded an alarm regarding the increasing threat posed by Russia and China’s satellites, which have been repeatedly observed spying on satellites used by Western powers. In recent weeks, the two countries have reported numerous instances of tracking, jamming, and interference from Russia on their space satellites, writes CNN.
“Russia’s actions, especially in space, represent a fundamental threat to us all, a threat we can no longer ignore,” stated the German Minister of Defense, Boris Pistorius, in September, at a conference in Berlin dedicated to the space industry.
Targeting communication satellites can affect telecommunications and satellite internet services, while disrupting navigation and positioning systems has direct consequences on military operations, as well as on civil aviation, according to the global analysis institute RAND.
The warnings come in the context of the three-year war in Ukraine. According to Ukrainian officials, Moscow has intensified its cooperation with Beijing, with China conducting satellite reconnaissance missions over Ukrainian territory on behalf of Russia.
