Russia’s Ambassador to North Korea, Aleksandr Matsegora, who has been in post for over ten years, has died “suddenly,” announced the Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday, amid a recent strengthening of the alliance between Moscow and Pyongyang, reports AFP, according to Agerpres.

In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced “with deep regret” that Aleksandr Matsegora, aged 70, died on December 6, 2025.

Without providing further details about the cause of his death, Russian diplomacy pays tribute to him, emphasizing that, since the beginning of his career in the late 1970s, this Korean speaker worked for economic and diplomatic cooperation between North Korea and the Soviet Union, then Russia.

“Under his astute and sensitive leadership, several generations of diplomats and specialists from Korea have been formed,” emphasizes the Russian ministry.
