Estonian politician Aivo Peterson has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for treason in favor of Moscow. According to the Estonian court that issued the sentence, Peterson had undertaken a trip organized by Russia to the occupied Ukrainian territories.

The Harju court found that Peterson and his collaborator, Dmitri Roots, who was sentenced to 11 years in prison, had “assisted the Russian Federation in its influence activities against Estonia,” reports Agerpres.

A former border guard, Peterson founded the KOOS party (“Together”). The party advocates for Finland’s withdrawal from NATO, for reducing defense spending, and for protecting monuments from the communist era in this former Soviet republic.

He has never been elected to public office, but he received a significant number of votes in parliamentary and European elections.

Peterson was sentenced to 14 years in prison for treason in favor of Moscow, along with Roots, and was also accused of trying to create a civil defense organization.

The court found that Peterson had undertaken a trip, paid for and partially coordinated by Russian citizen Andrei Andronov (also sentenced to 11 years in prison), to the occupied Ukrainian territories.
