Volodimir Zelenski, the President of Ukraine, is making an official visit to Serbia on Saturday, a surprise trip to a country considered a traditional ally of Russia. This is Zelenski’s first visit to Belgrade since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began.
The visit is surprising, especially considering that Serbia has been one of the countries that has had a rather pro-Russian attitude in the last four years.
“We need to separate the Serbs from the Russian camp,” a high-ranking Ukrainian official declared, on condition of anonymity. This move by Volodimir Zelenski is a “slap for the Russians,” he added.
“No one will be able to say anymore that Serbia is a reserved space for Russia and that Zelensky does not go there,” the same official declared.
Zelenski’s first visit to Belgrade
Volodymyr Zelensky, who has increased his foreign trips to strengthen international support for his country, has not made any visit to Serbia since coming to power in 2019.
Serbia remains one of the few countries that have not adopted sanctions against Russia following the outbreak of the war. Serbia depends on Russia for its gas supply.
