The Hungarian Foreign Minister raises an alarm in front of the EU Council in Brussels, warning that a military exercise of EU forces on Ukrainian territory could quickly escalate into a global conflict.
The Hungarian Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, issued a warning on Thursday, January 29, about plans to deploy a military exercise of European Union forces on Ukrainian territory, emphasizing that such a move could escalate into a global conflict. Statements were made in front of the Hungarian press in Brussels, where the official was attending the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC).
“They want the European Union’s (forces) training to be moved to Ukraine,” said Peter Szijjarto, referring to previous initiatives by France and the United Kingdom to send troops to the territory invaded by Russia four years ago.
He warned that the military presence of EU member states on Ukrainian soil would represent a violation of a red line, which could lead to a direct armed confrontation between EU countries and Russia.
Given that the majority of EU member states are part of NATO, Peter Szijjarto insisted that the risk of a conflict between the North Atlantic Alliance and Russia could degenerate into a Third World War.
Harsh criticism of the EU
The official, who is part of the government led by ultranationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban, known for his closeness to the Kremlin and admiration for US President Donald Trump, added that at the FAC meeting it was found that the “EU is not prepared for peace” in Ukraine.
The Minister criticized what he called the “major obstacle to Trump’s peace efforts,” considering that Brussels, the center of the European Union, is the main stumbling block.
“This makes the situation clearer than ever: while the US president is making immense efforts for peace, the biggest obstacle is Brussels, the European Union itself,” Szijjarto said, quoted in a statement from the ministry he leads.
