The President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, stated that he does not believe Russia would risk launching an attack against a NATO member country, affirming for the German newspaper “Bild” that it would make “no sense” to test the Alliance’s resolve, reports Reuters.
His statement comes after some Western officials warned about an increasing risk of Russian hybrid operations, including cyber attacks, against European countries, which could lead to a direct confrontation with the NATO Alliance.
German officials have stated that, according to their assessments, Russia would be capable of attacking a NATO member country by 2029.
“If someone has such a crystal ball – it’s wonderful. I simply see no evidence, no facts to support this,” he stated in an interview with Bild published on Saturday, adding that he does not believe Russia “would ever want to attack NATO, the strongest military alliance in the world.”
Stubb, whose country joined NATO in 2023, abandoning its previous policy of neutrality following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, asserted that the alliance must be prepared for any scenario, but does not believe that Moscow would be capable of going to war with NATO.
