Russia has escalated its air strikes on Ukraine at an unprecedented rate. Putin’s forces have once again targeted the main mode of transport for international military aid to Ukraine, the railway. Since the outbreak of the war, the Ukrainian railway has undergone an unprecedented effort and has managed to remain functional under conditions that seemed inconceivable until 2022. The Ukrainian trains have been referred to by the people in the war as the country’s “lifeline”. Digi24.ro shows below why.

The Ukrainian Railways have survived by quickly repairing damaged railways, adapting services to meet the needs during the war, such as evacuating refugees and transporting humanitarian aid, and maintaining operational integrity despite continuous attacks, even obtaining international support for the purchase of new equipment and restoration of infrastructure.

    Key factors for survival

Key factors include the dedication of railway workers, the strategic importance of the network for civil and military logistics, and the emphasis on quick recovery and adaptation.

Quick repair of damages is an essential element in the operation of the railway. Workers and engineers have continuously worked to repair bombed bridges, damaged rails, and critical infrastructure, ensuring the functionality of the network.

The railways have become a crucial lifeline, facilitating the evacuation of millions of civilians, troop movement, and delivery of humanitarian aid.
