The former German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel wanted to clarify that she does not blame Poland and the Baltic states for Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, describing this point of view as “fake news”, reports dpa, quoted by Agerpres. A month ago, she was at the center of a scandal because of a statement made in an interview.
A fragment from her autobiography “Freedom” was placed “in a wrong context”, Merkel declared on Thursday for the German television channel Phoenix.
The fragment states that the Baltic states and Poland rejected a dialogue format with Russia proposed by Merkel in 2021.
However, this observation “was not associated with assigning blame”, Merkel insisted.
“War broke out, this changed our world, this is an aggression of the Russian Federation, of the Russian Republic, of Vladimir Putin”, Merkel said. “None of us – anyone, me, anyone else – could not prevent this war”.
