Berlin asserts that Russia is responsible for the failed drone attack last month at Leipzig airport.
Germany considers Russia “responsible” for the “hybrid attack” which, according to Berlin, was committed with a drone loaded with explosives in early August at Leipzig airport, a key air base for the German army, NATO, and the logistical support provided to Ukraine, stated the German Interior Minister on Tuesday, according to AFP, BBC News and The Guardian.
“Overall, police investigations, modes of operation, and intelligence service information demonstrate Russia’s responsibility in the attempted attack at Leipzig airport,” said Minister Alexander Dobrindt, in a brief statement.
Dobrindt invokes the “well-established model of Russian hybrid operations”
On August 4, at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany, near some Ukrainian cargo planes, a drone carrying an explosive device was discovered.
The device did not explode because the detonator was apparently defective, and investigators suspect that a second drone collided with a nearby cargo plane. There are also reports that a third drone was found near the airport 10 days later.
The Minister of the Interior, Alexander Dobrindt, stated that the attack at Leipzig airport followed the “well-established pattern of Russian hybrid operations in Europe” and that it is presumed that Germany will once again be the target of such attacks.
