The European Commission wants the so-called “anti-drone wall” in Eastern Europe to be fully operational by the end of 2027, and a surveillance system on the eastern flank a year later, according to a roadmap presented on Thursday, as part of a campaign to strengthen European defense by 2030, reports Reuters and EFE, according to Agerpres.

Brussels justifies its proposals included in the new defense strategy of the European Union, by the fears fueled by the war in Ukraine that Russia could attack a member state of the community bloc and by the calls of the American President Donald Trump for the EU to do more for its own security.

“The danger will not disappear even when the war in Ukraine ends. It is clear that we need to strengthen our defense against Russia,” said the head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas.

The European Commission considers two projects to be priorities: the “anti-drone wall”, renamed the “European Drone Defense Initiative”, and the “Eastern Flank Watch”, intended to strengthen the eastern borders of the EU in terrestrial, aerial, and maritime space.

The European executive proposes that both initiatives have an initial operational capacity by the end of next year, and the “anti-drone wall” to be fully functional in 2027. The eastern flank surveillance system is expected to be completed in 2028.
