The Alternative for Germany Party (AfD) announced that it is filing a complaint against Chancellor Friedrich Merz, accusing him of defamation. The party’s representatives are outraged that the official has labeled the concept of “remigration” as “ethnic cleansing.”

In the opinion of the party representatives, such statements by the chancellor are “criminally condemnable” and “totally unacceptable”.

Members of the Bundestag enjoy immunity, the only reason they can be investigated being defamation and insults, writes news.ro.

Following the recent victory of the AFD in the regional elections in Saxony Anhalt, Chancellor Friedrich Merz tried on Wednesday to regain ground and accused the AfD of promoting an “ethnic cleansing” through “remigration.” The term is used by the far right to define their policy of expelling foreigners.

“The word remigration is nothing more than a synonym for ethnic cleansing, based on origin and skin color,” said Friedrich Merz in a debate in the Bundestag.

The head of the German Government spoke out following an aggressive speech by Alice Weidel, co-chair of the AfD, who expressed her regret that Germans have to bear the consequences of migration.
