The Danish government will not send any representatives to the World Economic Forum in Davos, a decision that comes in the context of escalating a sensitive dispute with the United States over the status of Greenland, according to Bloomberg.
The organizers of the meeting confirmed to the quoted source the absence of the delegation from Copenhagen, emphasizing that the invitation was sent, but participation remains at the discretion of each government, reports News.ro.
“The representatives of the Danish government were invited this year, and any decision regarding participation is the responsibility of the government in question. We can confirm that the Danish government will not be represented at Davos this week”, the organizers of the Davos Forum pointed out.
Tensions between Washington and Copenhagen escalated over the weekend, after President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on imports from eight NATO member states. The measure prompted the European Union to examine a possible commercial response, targeting American products worth approximately 93 billion euros.
In a statement made on Saturday, Donald Trump announced the imposition of a 10% tariff from February 1, with an increase to 25% in June, if no agreement is reached on what he called “the acquisition of Greenland”.
This happened after several European countries announced their intention to conduct symbolic NATO military exercises on the island, considered strategic in the geopolitical competition with Russia and China.
We remind that the President of the United States refused to say whether he would rule out the use of military force to take over Greenland, in a brief telephone interview granted to NBC News. When asked directly if a military intervention is an option, Trump tersely replied: “No comment”.
