Igor Dodon read a speech in French from a sheet at Strasbourg. The former president of Moldova criticized the government and said that, in fact, the citizens living in the country would not have wanted to join the European Union and would have voted predominantly “against” in the referendum.
“Now, you will probably understand better why support for the pro-European vector is not very popular among Moldovans. Because the pro-EU vector is today associated with the authoritarian, corrupt and incompetent governance of the PAS party and Maia Sandu. (…) At the referendum on orientation towards the EU, in 2024, the majority of Moldovan citizens in the country voted negatively. And only the Moldovan diaspora in the West, with just a few thousand votes, ensured a barely positive result. (…) I tell you all these things, so that you understand well that the reality in the Republic of Moldova differs greatly from what the representatives of the power in Chisinau declare to you. And Euroscepticism is very strong,” said Igor Dodon at the Council of Europe.
The speech was a response to Maia Sandu’s statements. The President of Moldova claimed at the podium of the Council of Europe that Russia wants to use Moldova against Europe and Ukraine, installing a loyal government in Moldova.
After Maia Sandu’s statements, Igor Dodon. defended Russia and announced that he had requested a speech at the podium of the Council of Europe, claiming that he would like to show Europeans the state of affairs in Moldova.
