Donald Trump suggested that the best way to end the war in Ukraine would be to “divide” the Donbas region, in a way that would leave most of it under Russian control. According to reports, during the meeting at the White House, Trump would have pressured Zelensky to give up vast stretches of territory.
“Let it be as it fell,” Trump reported in a statement made to reporters aboard Air Force One. “It’s already cut now,” Trump clarified about Donbas, adding that “things should be left as they are now”.
“They can start negotiations a bit later, regarding the demarcation line,” he said. “But now, both sides need to stop at the contact line, go home, stop fighting and stop killing people.”
His statements come after a tense meeting with the Ukrainian president at the White House on Friday, and mark a sudden change of tone from his position in September, when he claimed that Ukraine could recover all its territories and even “go further” into Russian territory. At that time, Trump described Russia as a “paper tiger”.
