Several major cities in Ukraine have been left without electricity following a massive combined attack launched by the Russian army on the energy infrastructure on the night of November 8. The strikes destroyed the thermal power plants in Tripilia and Zmiev, located in the Kiev and Kharkov regions. These units belong to the state-owned company Centrenergo, which provides 14% of the country’s electricity production. Another power plant operated by the private company DTEK was also damaged.

In Kiev, the majority of consumers were left without light. The local press has published images of the capital plunged into darkness. Shops, pharmacies, and other institutions are operating on generators and alternative energy sources. The authorities have introduced a blackout schedule, according to which residents will be without electricity for up to 13.5 hours a day.

The city of Kharkov, the second largest in Ukraine (1.3 million inhabitants), was also completely affected by the outage. The subway is not operating, and the water supply is disrupted. On the eve of the attack, a operational meeting was held in the region, led by the Minister of Energy, Svetlana Grinchuk. The authorities have described the situation as “difficult” and have urged the population to conserve electricity.
