Last week, Estonia began construction of the first five bunkers on the border with Russia, as part of a so-called Baltic defense line, according to an announcement made on Wednesday, December 17, by the Estonian Center for Defense Investments.
In the second phase, which will be implemented over the coming months, another 23 bunkers will be built, and by the end of 2027, the construction of about 600 underground shelters in north-east and south-east Estonia should be completed, reports EFE agency, quoted by Agerpres.
Estonia, along with the other two Baltic states, former Soviet republics, Lithuania and Latvia, maintains difficult relations with Moscow, all three standing out among the most fervent supporters of Ukraine in the war with Russia.
As part of the same Baltic defensive line, the construction of the first 3.4-kilometer section of an anti-tank trench will begin in the near future, which will eventually be about 40 kilometers long.
Estonian Colonel Ainar Afanasiev emphasized the importance of carefully choosing the locations for bunkers and trenches, so that they are adapted to the terrain and the army’s defense plans.
