Europe has come to the painful conclusion that it must be more proactive and militarily independent from an authoritarian US administration that no longer shares a commitment to liberal democratic norms and values, states a report prepared ahead of the Munich Security Conference (MSC), which begins on Friday, according to the prestigious publication, cited by News.ro.
The document anticipates an open ideological confrontation with the Trump administration at the annual meeting of security experts.
The turning point for Europeans was the speech given last year at the MSC by US Vice President, JD Vance, who accused European elites of limiting freedom of speech and “opening the gates” to mass immigration. The statements fueled the perception that Washington is no longer a reliable partner in trade and security.
Since then, tensions have accumulated: pressure on Ukraine for territorial concessions, Donald Trump’s threat to seize Greenland, tariff barriers, and investment bans. The divergences were also highlighted by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who warned at Davos of a rupture between the US and its Western allies.
The new national security strategy of the United States has amplified European concerns, accusing continental leaders of witnessing the “erasure of civilization”. In addition, Trump questioned the courage of European soldiers in Afghanistan, sparking outrage in NATO capitals.
J.D. Vance will not attend Munich this year, but Secretary of State Marco Rubio and a Congressional delegation are expected at the event.
