Second-hand electronic devices infected with malicious software, which turn the gadgets into nodes of botnet networks used for DDoS attacks, have been discovered on the Russian market. The information was reported by the publication Izvestia, citing cybersecurity companies.

According to specialists, it’s not just about laptops and smartphones, but any device connected to the internet – including “smart” TVs, consoles, vacuum cleaners or intelligent coffee makers.

Daniil Glushakov, an analyst at the cyber threat monitoring center of the company “Spikatel”, stated that the number of complaints from buyers of second-hand equipment has significantly increased. According to him, the malicious software automatically connects the devices to networks controlled by hackers. The infected gadgets access the network without user intervention, change data and exhibit other suspicious activities.

The trend was also confirmed by the head of the analytical department of the company Servicepipe, Anton Cemeakin.
