“Harvard University is suing the Trump administration and sparking a major conflict between America’s most prestigious institution of higher education and the federal government. The stakes are academic freedom, public funding, and control over university campuses. The legal dispute over frozen federal funds is expected to be lengthy and could potentially reach the Supreme Court, according to CNN.
The oldest university in the United States, Harvard has become a symbol of resistance against the former President Donald Trump, who attempted to “reclaim” control over colleges and universities by portraying this conflict as part of a fight against anti-Semitism. The university, on the other hand, claims that the Washington administration is attempting to subordinate the academic community.
The Trump administration has already eliminated diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, arrested international students and revoked their visas, and frozen federal funding for institutions that refused to comply with its demands.
According to court documents, Harvard argues that the funding cuts are a means for the administration to gain “influence” over the university and are part of a “pressure campaign” designed to force it to submit to government control.
“The government’s actions endanger Harvard’s academic independence and are part of a broader effort to punish the university for standing up for its constitutional rights,” the institution’s lawyers wrote.
