A disturbing incident took place on the afternoon of January 26, when a “Shahed” type kamikaze drone, belonging to the Russian Federation, was observed flying freely over the center of Kiev. Shortly thereafter, other unmanned devices were reported on the left bank of the Dnieper, and witnesses noted the possibility that these could be equipped with video cameras and guided by the Starlink system.

The fact that such a drone managed to reach the capital of Ukraine, covering at least 200 kilometers from the Russian border or approximately 100 kilometers from Belarus, raised questions about the detection capacity of the Ukrainian anti-aircraft defense, writes focus.ua.

The explanation does not, however, lie in a defect of the defense system, asserts the veteran of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and former M2 Bradley company commander, Mikola Melnik. In an intervention on the “Novini.Live” station, he explained that the drone flew at an extremely low altitude, of about 100 meters, which made it difficult to detect by radar.

“Throughout the flight, it did not exceed the threshold of 100 meters above the ground”, Melnik specified, underlining that, for this reason, the device was observed only visually, not by technical surveillance systems.
