Russia has used cryptocurrencies to fund networks of saboteurs in Europe, involved in actions specific to hybrid warfare, from drone incursions to the destruction of critical infrastructure in NATO states, according to the head of Poland’s national security office, Sławomir Cenckiewicz, quoted by Financial Times.
By using cryptocurrencies, Russia has tried to prevent intelligence services from tracking payments, the high-ranking Polish security official further said.
He also said that evidence shared with Western intelligence services showed that Russia is using its shadow fleet to launch drones into European airspace.
A network of agents recruited by Russia’s military intelligence agency GRU and discovered in Poland in 2023 was “largely funded with cryptocurrencies,” said Cenckiewicz, a payment method that Warsaw believes Moscow continues to use to this day.
“From a cybernetic point of view, Poland is now at war”
In the last three years, Poland has accused dozens of people of espionage or sabotage and has accused Russia of orchestrating powerful fires at strategic targets and other incidents, including a recent attempt at cyber piracy intended to disrupt the water supply of a major Polish city.
