Hungary and Slovakia intend to sue the European Union, in a joint action at the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU), if the plan to gradually ban imports of Russian natural gas is implemented. Hungarian Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, announced that as soon as the final vote on this agreement is given in Brussels, “we will immediately challenge it,” reports The Moscow Times.

Szijjártó argues that the plan agreed on December 3 poses a threat to the energy security and economies of both countries. The head of Hungarian diplomacy called the decision of the EU institutions a “dictate from Brussels” and stated that the ban would lead to market monopolization, a sharp increase in prices, and higher electricity bills for Hungarians.

The EU Council approved on Wednesday a plan to gradually ban imports of Russian natural gas.

According to the document, a total ban on imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) will come into effect at the end of 2026, and on gas imports via pipelines starting from the fall of 2027, taking into account the transition periods for existing contracts.
