Hungary expels 10 Russian diplomats, “involved in unacceptable activities”. Foreign Minister Aneta Orban states that, however, relations between the two countries will not be severed.

In response, Moscow threatened a “painful” retaliation for Budapest.

The measure is an unprecedented one for Hungary, according to Antena3. The cited source notes that Budapest has never expelled so many Russian diplomats.

“This decision safeguards Hungary’s security and sovereignty. It does not imply breaking diplomatic relations with Russia. Hungary intends to continue the necessary dialogue, based on mutual respect and adherence to rules,” conveyed the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Prime Minister Peter Magyar emphasized that the authorities will protect the country’s sovereignty and independence.
