German Chancellor Friedrich Merz convened a telephone meeting of the National Security Council on Friday. The meeting was held after the discovery of a drone with explosives at the Leipzig airport, on Tuesday night to Wednesday.
The incident in Leipzig represents a possible hybrid attack scenario, according to German officials. Some politicians suggest that Russia could be responsible for the incident.
On Wednesday, in the early hours of the morning, air traffic was disrupted for two hours at Leipzig-Halle Airport after a drone carrying an explosive device was discovered and subsequently defused, reports Agerpres.
According to the German newspaper Bild, a driver working at the airport noticed a drone hovering at a low altitude around the Ukrainian cargo planes, caught it and held it on the ground until the arrival of experts.
The drone contained Semtex – an explosive used in industrial and military applications. Prosecutors in Germany initiated investigations on Thursday.
Another drone crashed into a DHL cargo plane on the same day. The crew made an emergency landing in Hanover, following the incident, and no one was harmed.
