In recent days, several videos and messages promoting the idea of creating the so-called “People’s Republic of Narva” have appeared online in Estonia. According to an analysis published by Bild, the phenomenon raises questions among authorities and could indicate a possible preparation by the Russian Federation for a new regional destabilization.
Residents of Narva have noticed on social networks and in messaging apps a series of propaganda materials with radical anti-Estonian rhetoric. In some videos and on leaflets distributed online, masked individuals announce the creation of a “republic”, for which they even invented a flag: three horizontal bands of black, green, and white.
Sources from the Estonian security services told Bild that they see similarities with the informational atmosphere in the early days of the escalation in Ukraine, before the Russian intervention 12 years ago. In their opinion, the intensification of propaganda could represent an attempt at destabilization, especially in the context of international tensions and the war in Iran, which could provide Moscow with an opportune moment for parallel actions.
The German publication identified several disinformation videos encouraging the formation of the “People’s Republic of Narva”. However, Estonian authorities maintain that, for now, there are no clear indications of an imminent invasion, although the threat is not excluded.
A map circulating on the internet shows the supposed territory of the new formation, located in northeastern Estonia. The so-called “activists” talk about a state that would extend “from Narva to Püssi”, which would mean the separation of an area of approximately 60 by 60 kilometers, or about 3,600 km² from Estonian territory.
