An influential commentator on Russian state television has suggested that Russia should strike Elon Musk’s satellites with nuclear weapons, in the context where Space X has responded to Ukraine’s call to help prevent Russian forces from using Starlink terminals to guide attacks on Ukraine, reports Newsweek.
“I don’t understand why, for example, Elon Musk’s satellites wouldn’t be a legitimate target for us”, said Vladimir Soloviev, a well-known presenter on state television, closely linked to the Kremlin on Sunday. “A single detonation of a nuclear weapon in space, as I understand it, would solve this problem.”
Starlink satellites, managed by Musk’s SpaceX company, have proven to be vital for Ukraine on the battlefield since the beginning of the war, with Kiev relying heavily on them for communications and control of its drone fleet. The Starlink network, made up of thousands of satellites, is in an orbit closer to Earth than other satellites that can be used for similar purposes.

Ukraine has repeatedly denounced the fact that Russian forces have used Starlink terminals on the front, including in the disputed areas of eastern Ukraine. Musk has vehemently denied that Starlink terminals are sold to Russia and announced on Sunday that Space X has taken drastic measures against the “unauthorized” use of satellites by Moscow, following new warnings from Kiev about drone attacks equipped with Starlink.
Soloviev admitted that a nuclear attack on Starlink would come at the cost of Russia’s own satellites, adding, not without irony: “But anyway we are far behind – nothing serious, we will simply switch to carrier pigeons.”
