The US President, Donald Trump, will allow the promotion in Congress of a bipartisan bill regarding the application of sanctions against countries doing business with Russia. The vote on the document could take place as early as next week, announced Republican Senator Lindsey Graham on social network X, quoted by BBC News.

According to Graham, Trump gave the green light to this bill after their meeting on Wednesday.

The document, which Graham has been working on for several months together with Republicans and Democrats, provides for the introduction of sanctions against states that cooperate with Russia, including against buyers of Russian energy resources, due to Moscow’s refusal to negotiate for a peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine.

“This bill will allow President Trump to punish countries that buy cheap Russian oil and thus fuel Putin’s war machine”, Graham declared, mentioning among possible targets China, India, and Brazil.

The Senator from South Carolina emphasized that he expects a “strong bipartisan vote” in support of the bill, which could take place as early as next week.

The leadership of the Senate and the House of Representatives has so far abstained from putting the document to a vote, as Trump preferred to introduce customs duties for goods imported from India – the second largest buyer of Russian oil in the world, after China, notes Reuters.
