Aleksandr Lukashenko, the President of Belarus, emphasized that Ukraine should have sought normal relations with Moscow and should not have awakened the “sleeping bear”, an allusion to Russian imperial ambitions. In response, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, said that the one who woke up next to the “sleeping bear” should question how they got there.

The leader from Minsk, an ally of Vladimir Putin, but who is increasingly visited by officials from the Trump administration, said that if Kiev wanted to build a certain language policy, it should have done so calmly and step by step, over several years, asserting that Ukraine simply decided to “put a lid on” the Russian-speaking population, reports the official Russian agency TASS, cited by News.ro.

“Well, then, I tell you as an old politician: if you live next to this ‘sleeping bear’, don’t wake it up, find normal relations”, declared the leader from Minsk in an interview given to Newsmax TV.

The President of Belarus underlined that he was present at the negotiations where Russia reached an agreement with Ukraine regarding both Crimea and security. He mentioned that Kiev did not need military bases on the peninsula, so the parties agreed that these would be Russian.
