Serbian prosecutors announced on Tuesday that they had opened an investigation into a government minister and several diplomats accused of obstructing voting during Sunday’s parliamentary elections, in which the opposition defeated nationalist Aleksandar Vucic, AFP reported, as carried by Agerpres.

Those suspected of abuse of office include the incumbent foreign minister, Marko Djuric, three ministry employees, and ambassadors accredited to Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, France, Romania, Slovakia and Switzerland.

Serbian citizens living abroad have complained about the lack of polling stations near their homes, with many forced to travel hundreds or even thousands of kilometres to exercise their right to vote.

The prosecutor’s office for combating organized crime said on Tuesday that it had “immediately instructed the police to gather information and carry out urgent checks.”

More than 100,000 Serbian citizens have registered to vote from abroad in Sunday’s election—three times as many as in the previous election in 2023.
