The new Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, was reportedly secretly transported to Russia for medical treatment following injuries sustained from American-Israeli bombings on Iran.
The Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida, citing a source close to the Iranian leadership, claims that Mojtaba Khamenei was transported to Russia on a Russian military aircraft after being injured during the attacks on Tehran on February 28.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is said to have personally offered to host the Iranian leader for treatment during a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Following internal consultations in Tehran, the proposal was reportedly accepted, and Khamenei was transported to Russia the same evening, accompanied by Iranian doctors. He underwent surgery in Moscow, also reported by dailymail.
Unconfirmed sources say that Mojtaba Khamenei is in a coma, and some reports suggest that he may have lost one or both legs, and his liver or stomach may have been affected. He is being treated by Mohammad Reza Zafarghandi, the Iranian Minister of Health and one of the country’s top trauma surgeons.
It remains unclear whether Mojtaba’s injuries were caused by the same attacks that killed his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, aged 86. Iranian officials have confirmed that the new leader is injured, but have not provided further details.
In the meantime, Iranian commanders on the ground appear to have received no orders from the Supreme Leader, and the country is temporarily being run by officials of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who continue military operations.
