Russia has contacts with Venezuela, stated the Kremlin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, when asked about reports of a possible request for assistance from Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“We are in contact with our Venezuelan friends”, Peskov declared for the TASS news agency, reports Agerpres.
According to The Washington Post, Maduro would have asked for the help of Russia, China, and Iran to strengthen his country’s defense against American pressure.
Peskov, who did not directly mention Maduro’s alleged request, emphasized that Russia and Venezuela are united by “contractual obligations”. The two countries signed a strategic partnership agreement in May, during Maduro’s visit to Moscow.
On October 29, the Vice President of the Defense Committee of the Russian State Duma, Alexei Zhuravlev, threatened that Moscow could deliver nuclear-capable missiles to “Venezuela or Cuba”, noting that they are close to what he called Russia’s “main geopolitical adversary”, the United States.
