President Nicușor Dan commented in an interview for Le Monde on the new US Security Strategy, in which the European Union is criticized by the Trump administration. According to Nicușor Dan, the critical positions towards Europe reflect “differences in ideological approach”. On the other hand, the president emphasized that neither Europeans nor Americans can afford to desire a division, because “our common interests are more important”.
“The new strategy confirms several directions already anticipated: the emphasis of the United States’ strategic attention on the Indo-Pacific region and the expectation that European states will take on a more substantial role in ensuring security on our continent. As far as Romania is concerned, we take very seriously the commitments made in The Hague [at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in June] and dedicate substantial resources to defense and security, in full compliance with our responsibilities as an ally”.
Nicușor Dan emphasized that the strategic partnership with the US represents for Romania “a fundamental anchor for regional stability”.
“It is true that the document also contains critical positions towards Europe, sometimes reflecting differences in ideological approach. However, I am fully convinced that the strategic partnership between Romania and the United States remains a fundamental anchor for regional stability.Beyond differences of opinion, we must focus on the considerable potential of cooperation between the EU and the United States. Our common interests, both on the continent and beyond, are more important than what separates us. Today’s difficult circumstances oblige us, Europeans and Americans alike, to imagine together the world of tomorrow and to make it possible together. We cannot give our competitors the satisfaction of seeing us divided”.
