Nikol Pashinyan announced that Armenia could soon sign and send the application for accession to the European Union. The Prime Minister of Yerevan spoke on the subject in front of the parliamentarians, commenting on a possible referendum regarding the integration of his country into the EU.
“First, Armenia must submit its application for membership to the European Union. We could trigger this process in the near future, especially given the urgent requests of our partners from the Eurasian Economic Union,” said Pashinyan, as quoted by Agerpres.
The presidents of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan called on the Armenian authorities in May to decide through a referendum whether to join the EU or remain in the Eurasian Union.
Russia does not look favorably upon the European ambitions of the Armenians, considering the country important for its sphere of influence. The Kremlin insists on organizing a vote and wants the Caucasian state to move closer to the Eurasian Union.
The Kremlin has imposed sanctions on Armenia, after the country opted for a closer relationship with the European Union. More precisely, Moscow has banned the import of several agricultural products.
