Pope Leo XIV draws attention to the fact that Europe cannot be excluded from any diplomatic effort related to the war in Ukraine, emphasizing that the front is right on the continent and that European states have the responsibility – but also the capacity – to participate in the architecture of a potential peace. The statement came on Tuesday, after the pontiff’s meeting with President Volodimir Zelenski, who is on a diplomatic tour through European capitals to discuss a peace plan.
In the press conference, the Pope spoke about the need for a ceasefire and the Vatican’s efforts to facilitate the return of Ukrainian children illegally deported to Russia. When asked about the peace proposal launched by the United States and the apparent marginalization of Europe in this initiative, the Pope was adamant: without Europe at the table, no solution can be realistic.
“Seeking an understanding without including Europe in negotiations is simply unrealistic, as long as the war is taking place right here, on the continent”, he stated. “Security guarantees are being discussed, today and for the future. Europe must be part of this process. And, unfortunately, not everyone understands this. However, I believe there is a real space for European leaders to come together and act jointly.”
When asked more specifically about Washington’s position, Pope Leo extended the discussion to the transatlantic relationship, criticizing the Trump administration’s view of the alliance between the United States and Europe. The new US national security strategy, published last week, questions the old American-European partnership and hints at a diplomatic pivot towards a possible rapprochement with Russia.
